uPVC Door Repair vs Replace Cost | The Real Maths
Gearbox service or full door replacement? Real costs for Belper homeowners over ten years, with a table that makes the decision obvious.
A full uPVC door replacement on a Belper semi costs between £800 and £1,800 fitted. A gearbox service and cylinder upgrade costs between £120 and £250. Those two numbers are the whole argument, really, but let me show you the working.
What Actually Fails on a uPVC Door
The door itself, the PVC slab, almost never fails. What gives up are the mechanical components inside it.
- The multipoint gearbox (the long strip running up the edge of the door) wears out its cam and snib mechanism. A stiff handle, a key that won't turn, a door that won't latch properly. Classic gearbox death.
- The euro cylinder gets ten years of daily use, plus the occasional botched entry attempt. By year seven or eight a lot of cylinders on Openwoodgate and Milford estates are genuinely past their best.
- The keeps and strikers work loose as the frame settles. A door that drops slightly on its hinges will stress the gearbox every single time you lift the handle.
Nothing here requires a new door. It requires a service.
The Numbers, Over Ten Years
| Scenario | Year 0 | Year 4 to 5 | Year 8 to 10 | Ten-Year Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Replace whole door | £800 to £1,800 | nothing | nothing | £800 to £1,800 |
| Service only (gearbox + cylinder twice) | £0 | £120 to £250 | £120 to £250 | £240 to £500 |
| Service + one cylinder upgrade (TS007 3-star) | £0 | £160 to £280 | £120 to £200 | £280 to £480 |
| Repair after one emergency callout mid-decade | £0 | £80 to £150 | £120 to £250 | £200 to £400 |
The worst-case repair route is still less than a third of the cheapest door replacement. And a new door doesn't come with a better lock unless you specify one.
What Drives Replacement Costs Up
Door companies quote a wide range because they're selling a wide range. A basic white panel door with a standard GU or Fuhr gearbox and a builder-grade cylinder sits at the lower end. Composite doors, decorative glass, a coloured finish, a Winkhaus or Maco multipoint system with a Ultion or Mul-T-Lock cylinder specified, and you're past £1,500 before installation. The fitters on Belper Lane End and Bridge Hill know this territory well.
The replacement cost also assumes the frame is sound. If the frame is rotten or warped, you're adding another £200 to £400. If it isn't, you almost certainly don't need the door either.
What Drives Repair Costs Up
Labour is the main variable. An emergency callout on a Sunday evening when the door won't close costs more than a booked morning appointment. Parts are rarely the problem: a Maco or GU gearbox runs £30 to £60 wholesale. A decent TS007 3-star cylinder like an Avocet ABS or Ultion adds £40 to £90 to the parts cost.
If somebody has already forced the handle and cracked the gearbox casing, repair becomes a straight replacement of the mechanism, not a service. That's still £150 to £250 all-in, which is not a replacement door.
When Replacement Actually Makes Sense
Sometimes it does. A door from the late 1990s with a frame that's lost its square, single-glazed panels, and a lock spec that won't satisfy a modern home insurance clause is a fair candidate. So is a door that's been forced and has hairline cracks in the slab near the lock. But these are specific circumstances, not the general case.
If your door closes, seals, and looks reasonable, and the fault is mechanical, replacement is almost always the expensive answer to a cheap question.
Spend It Sensibly
Book a service before it becomes a callout. A gearbox that's stiff but working costs £120 to £160 to sort on a booked visit. The same gearbox seized at 11pm costs more, and you might spend a night with the door propped shut. Heage, Holbrook, Kilburn, Duffield, all within the DE56 patch, and the pattern is the same everywhere: doors that fail have been protesting for months.
If you're going to spend money, spend it on the cylinder. A TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond-rated cylinder, fitted properly, makes your existing door meaningfully harder to attack. A new door with a builder-grade cylinder does not.
