Burglar Alarm vs Locks | Spend in the Right Order

Alarms react to a break-in. Locks prevent one. Here's why most Belper homes get the spending order backwards, and what to fix first.

Burglar alarms are sold first because they carry a monthly subscription. That's the whole story, really. It doesn't mean they're useless. It does mean you should think carefully before spending £400 on a monitored system while your front door still has the cylinder it left the factory with in 2009.

What an Alarm Actually Does

An alarm detects an intrusion that is already happening. The siren goes off. If you're with a monitoring company, someone rings a keyholder. Average police response to a residential alarm in Derbyshire? Depending on grading and availability, you're looking at many minutes, sometimes considerably more. By that point a motivated intruder has taken what they came for and left.

That's not a criticism of alarms. It's a description of what they are: a reactive tool. They're brilliant for telling you something went wrong. They're poor at stopping it going wrong in the first place.

What a Lock Actually Does

A good cylinder and a decent door stop the attempt entirely. Snap-resistant cylinders, the thing that matters most on a standard uPVC door in DE56, make the most common attack method fail. Cylinder snapping takes around 20 to 30 seconds on a cheap barrel. On an Ultion or an Avocet ABS with TS007 3-star certification, the attacker breaks their tool and moves on.

They don't linger. They don't try again. They walk to the next street.

TS007 3-star tests for snap resistance, pick resistance, and drill resistance under measurable force. SS312 Diamond grade goes further, requiring independent lab testing against a wider attack set. These aren't marketing labels. They're documented pass/fail criteria.

The Numbers That make the Point

A detached house in Belper Lane End or on the Openwoodgate estate with a properly fitted anti-snap cylinder, hinge bolts, and a BS3621-compliant deadlock is a genuinely harder target than the same house with a £600 alarm and an original cheap cylinder. Burglars assess doors in seconds. They can't see your monitoring contract.

The Obvious Objection

Some people will say alarms deter. Fair point. A bell box on the front of a property on Bridge Hill or in Milford does have some visual deterrent effect. And for contents insurance, some insurers ask for a monitored alarm by name. Both reasons to have one.

But deterrence works on the same logic as physical hardening: make the property look like effort. A quality cylinder upgrade does that too, often more cheaply, and without a standing order.

The One Honest Caveat

If you have a large detached property, high-value contents, or you travel frequently, an alarm with professional monitoring earns its cost. Ditto if your insurer specifically mandates one. The argument here isn't that alarms are bad. It's that fitting an alarm before you've addressed the door hardware is the wrong order.

Sort the physical layer first. It costs less, it requires no subscription, and it works without a phone signal.

Questions people actually ask

It can help. Many insurers ask for a BS3621 five-lever mortice or a cylinder rated to TS007 3-star as a condition of cover on external doors. Check your policy schedule for the exact wording. Fitting a compliant cylinder and keeping the receipt is the sensible move. It won't raise your premium and it may prevent a claim being reduced if you do suffer a break-in.
